"Wynn, 49, and McCaughey, 54, have been lifelong baseball fans. And Wynn, growing up in California, did sportswriting as a teenager and thought that would be his career.
"Then I saw the Sex Pistols play Winterland (in San Francisco) and that was the end of that," he says.
His first band of note, L.A.'s Dream Syndicate, channeled the Velvet Underground's prickly, shadowy, idiosyncratic Rock & Roll with uncanny intuition. How did he get from that to baseball, the all-American national pastime? He sees a natural connection.
"Baseball is such a game of eccentricity and individualism," Wynn says. "You can be an absolute freak, a malcontent, out of your mind and still excel as an individual regardless of how good your teammates are. It's a game of the oddball individuals, and that appeals to a Rock & Roll fan or musician. It's not a jock mentality: 'Live and die for the team, rah rah rah.' Steve: "I was listening to a lot of music that was surprisingly out of fashion at the time. Not many people were talking about bands like the Velvets and The Stooges and the Modern Lovers-everybody wanted to be into horrible synthesizer and New Romantic bands. It was pretty awful. But I knew I loved the sound of those bands as well as newer bands like The Fall, The Feelies, Black Flag and The Fleshtones and it turned out that a lot of other people were out there that wanted to hear that kind of raw, hypnotic guitar music as well."

Steve will be performing at Vienna's Stadfest on April 25 as part of a show called The Satellites of Love, a Tribute To Lou Reed. Steve will sing "Walk On The Wild Side," "Rock and Roll" and "The Blue Mask" backed by a band that includes old pals like Chris Cacavas, Chris Eckman and Chris Brokaw (it's the Chris Festival!) as well as various stars of the Austrian indie scene. But I think that a lot of people might be hearing for the first time this summer in a very new way. Scroll about 45 seconds into this trailer for “Bandslam,” the upcoming movie featuring Vanessa Hudgens, Aly Michalka (who sings the song), Lisa Kudrow and David Bowie. I've heard the full version of the song (and have been told that it's played at a garage rehearsal) and I think it's great. Horns! Now why didn't I think of that?"

One observer at the in-store compared it to both Television and Quicksilver Messenger Service.
